About Defibrillators
A defibrillator is a medical device. It is often seen on TV drama shows such as 'ER' when large paddles are placed on a victim's chest and doctors shout "CLEAR!" before they discharge a bolt of energy through the person's heart.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Many thousands of people die world-wide from cardiac arrest, most of them die before they reach the hospital. Now laypersons can help; simple to operate, the Automated External Defibrillator or AED has made it possible for the general public to use these devices within the community and save lives.
How AED's Work
The AED is attached to the cardiac arrest victim by a cable connected to two adhesive pads placed on the victim's chest. Electrical signals from victim's heart are sent to the AED through the pad and cables for analysis; a micro-processor then analyzes whether or not an electric shock is needed. The rescuer simply follows verbal voice prompts from the AED. If a shock is required the rescuer need only to press the shock button for defibrillation. (The AED will not allow the rescuer to deliver an inappropriate shock). Simple to use and weighing around 6-8 lbs AED's have eliminated the need for training in ECG rhythm recognition. Studies have shown that children at the age of 8 could work these devices
AED Manufacturers
There are a number of companies which manufacture FDA approved AEDs. Cost per unit depending on options selected is anything between HK$ 29,000 - 40,000.
AED Training in Hong Kong
There are several organizations in Hong Kong offering AED training programs in Hong Kong. Volunteer organizations such as St. John's Ambulance or the Hong Kong Red Cross provide AED programs.
ECT-HK offers fully authorized and certificated AED training programs from USA's two leading training organizations; American Heart Association (AHA) and National Safety Council (NSC). As a private organization we can assess your particular training requirements and provide training that best suits your needs.
Certified AED training courses can be completed in just 3 - 4 hours; CPR training is an integral factor in AED use. By taking an AED course and learning more about these lifesaving devices, you take one step closer in making Hong Kong a cardiac arrest aware and safer place.
